Serious illness does not only affect the body-it reshapes daily life for the entire household.
In Nyeri Central Sub-County, Compassionate Care for All has been supporting Daniel, a man living with prostate cancer and lower limb contractures, through structured home-based care and caregiver training. His journey reflects both the complexity of cancer recovery and the power of consistent, compassionate support at home.
The Challenge
Daniel is currently undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. Alongside the cancer diagnosis, he lives with lower limb contractures and a history of orthopedic surgery (open reduction and internal fixation) on his right leg. These conditions significantly limit his mobility and independence.
When we first engaged with the family, Daniel relied heavily on a wheelchair and required assistance for transfers, hygiene, medication management and emotional support. His partner had stepped into the role of primary caregiver - managing daily care while coping with the emotional weight of cancer.
In Kenya, many families navigate cancer and mobility limitations at home without structured guidance. Without proper training, complications can increase, hospital visits become frequent and caregiver burnout becomes a real risk.
Our Intervention: Comprehensive Home-Based Cancer Care
Compassionate Care for All implemented a structured care plan focused on both medical and functional recovery:
1. Mobility and Contracture Management
Training on safe transfers and wheelchair use
Guided stretching exercises to manage lower limb contractures
Positioning techniques to prevent further stiffness and discomfort
Post-surgical strengthening support for the previously operated limb
These measures help reduce pain, improve circulation and prevent further mobility decline.
2. Pain and Medication Support
Monitoring adherence to prescribed cancer treatment
Educating the caregiver on managing side effects
Implementing scheduled pain management strategies
Introducing additional comfort measures at home
By equipping the caregiver with clear medication routines, unnecessary emergency visits are minimized.
3. Emotional and Psychological Support
Cancer brings uncertainty, anxiety and frustration especially when mobility is restricted. Our team provided ongoing counseling support and practical communication strategies to strengthen the emotional resilience of both patient and caregiver.
The Impact So Far
Through consistent follow-up visits and monitoring:
Daniel maintains mobility with wheelchair assistance and structured exercises.
Contractures are being actively managed, preventing further deterioration.
Pain is better controlled through organized medication routines.
His partner reports reduced stress and greater confidence in providing daily care.
The caregiving environment has become calmer, more structured, and more hopeful.
Follow-up assessments ensure progress is tracked, care plans are adjusted and both patient and caregiver wellbeing remain priorities.
Why Home-Based Cancer Rehabilitation Matters
Home-based prostate cancer care in Nyeri County is not a luxury - it is a necessity. Hospital-based services are often expensive and difficult to access consistently. By empowering caregivers with practical training and structured follow-ups, we:
Reduce avoidable hospital readmissions
Prevent complications from immobility
Preserve patient dignity
Protect caregiver wellbeing
Strengthen family resilience
Continuing the Journey
Daniel’s recovery is ongoing. With continued physiotherapy guidance, contracture management, cancer treatment monitoring and caregiver support, there is strong potential to maintain stability and improve comfort.
At Compassionate Care for All, we believe that comprehensive cancer care extends beyond medication , it includes rehabilitation, caregiver empowerment, emotional support and consistent follow-up. This is how dignity is preserved, and quality of life is protected.
